Coventry City have abandoned their attempt to sign Manchester City prospect Stephen Mfuni, opening the door for Derby County to potentially make a move. The young defender had seemed destined for the CBS Arena after catching attention during a productive loan stint at Watford in the second half of last season.
The transfer will not proceed, with Coventry now prioritising Brentford’s Ethan Pinnock as they seek to bolster their backline with top-flight know-how.
This development leaves Mfuni seeking an alternative destination to continue his development, with Watford and Derby both monitoring the situation according to TalkSport. Derby must contend with the loss of Matt Clarke, who is expected to be sidelined for three months after suffering a calf problem, leaving Sondre Langas and Dion Sanderson as alternatives in that position.
Mfuni operates as a left-sided centre-back and could potentially fill the void left by Clarke, having previously been coached by Ben Wilkinson during his time at Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad. Wilkinson now serves on Derby’s coaching staff. The defender has attracted positive assessment at City and occupied a place on the substitutes’ bench for multiple Champions League matches prior to his move to Watford, where he demonstrated his abilities for the Hornets.
Watford have made clear their ambition to re-sign him, with sporting director Luke Dowling indicating earlier this summer that negotiations with City were underway.
Dowling stated that given everyone who observed Watford’s matches last season, particularly those featuring Mfuni, it would not be surprising if City retained him following Nathan Ake’s departure this year. He possesses left-footed ability similar to Ake, capable of playing at left-back or left centre-half, so that outcome would not be unexpected. Dowling added that the club maintains regular dialogue with City, urging patience regarding the outcome, while acknowledging the frustration with loan situations as they have no control over players who do not belong to them.
Pinnock, for his part, has entered the concluding year of his west London contract, which expires in 2027, and was not involved in Brentford’s opening victory against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.
Pinnock arrived at Brentford from Barnsley in 2019 and has since accumulated 216 appearances, contributing 12 goals and seven assists, while playing an instrumental part in their 2020-21 Championship promotion push.
In recent campaigns, however, his spot in the starting eleven has diminished, failing to make any appearances off the bench during the final eight Premier League matches of the 2024-25 season and featuring in just eight games throughout the previous term, with only four of those coming in league competition.
Pinnock has earned 28 senior caps for Jamaica, participating in every minute of their World Cup qualification play-offs as they overcame New Caledonia before suffering defeat against the Democratic Republic of Congo following extra time in the final.
