The West Midlands club are continuing their recruitment efforts ahead of their season-opening top-flight encounter against Arsenal on Friday evening. Mikel Arteta’s side will host the newly-promoted team in what marks their return to the top division for the first time since the start of the millennium. The Midlands side, who finished third in the Championship under new manager Frank Lampard, have been actively strengthening their squad throughout the summer months.
The club are reportedly in advanced negotiations to secure the signature of Wolves goalkeeper Daniel Bentley. Arsenal had previously shown interest in the shot-stopper two years prior, and the player is now set to join Coventry as competition for the number one spot. The deal is anticipated to be finalised before Friday’s fixture.
Frank Lampard took charge at the CBS Arena in November 2024, transforming the club’s fortunes from their position of 17th in English football’s second tier. Under his guidance, the team secured promotion to the Premier League, ending their two-decade absence from the top flight. Eight new signings have arrived at the club this summer, including Caleb Yirenkyi, Carl Rushworth, Loum Tchaouna, Aurele Amenda and Taiwo Awoniyi, as the club prepares for life in the elite division.
The Midlands club are also set to strengthen their goalkeeping options further. TalkSPORT report that Wolves custodian Bentley is being targeted as cover for Lampard’s side. The England international, who moved to Molineux from Bristol City in January 2023, has featured 12 times in the Premier League during his career. He has started Wolves’ opening two matches of the 2026/27 season, keeping goal against Port Vale in the EFL Cup and Blackburn Rovers in the Championship last week.
Bentley, 33, will depart Wolves after making just 17 appearances during his three-and-a-half-year spell at the club. His exit comes as Jose Sa has become the club’s backup option, while Sam Johnstone continues his recovery from injury. At Coventry, Bentley is expected to serve as understudy to Rushworth, with either Oliver Dovin or Ben Wilson likely to leave the club. Wolves rejected a £50,000 offer from Arsenal for the goalkeeper in July 2024, when the north London club were seeking competition for David Raya.
Club owner Doug King expressed optimism about the upcoming campaign, noting that promoted clubs must refresh their playing staff to compete at the higher level. He stated that significant work had been done to recruit players capable of performing in the Premier League, and he was satisfied with the club’s transfer business over the summer period.
