Championship winners Coventry City are just one day away from launching their Premier League comeback. Lampard takes his side to north London on Friday evening to face Mikel Arteta’s title-winning Gunners in their season opener.
The Midlands club appear determined to bolster their squad before the transfer deadline. AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori has emerged as a major target as Lampard seeks additional options at the back.
There is also genuine interest in Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk. Coventry have made enquiries to the west London club about the Ukrainian international’s potential availability.
While several English and overseas clubs are monitoring the situation, Coventry appear to be in the driving seat to secure a loan agreement. With the club having already brought in striker Taiwo Awoniyi, an outgoing move in attack seems probable, with Ellis Simms attracting attention from multiple second-tier sides including Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Lampard has nothing left to prove after a stellar playing career, though his final Premier League fixture in management came during his brief stint as Chelsea caretaker, a 1-1 stalemate with Newcastle United. During that spell, he managed just one victory from 11 attempts, raising questions about his credentials. For Coventry supporters, the 48-year-old has silenced many of those doubts over the past 18 months, and he believes he returns to a competition he conquered three times during his Stamford Bridge days in better condition.
Coventry’s attempts to sign two Chelsea players could receive significant assistance following a recent alteration to FIFA’s regulations. The club are chasing both Mudryk and Josh Acheampong from the Blues’ roster. Xabi Alonso is currently dealing with an oversized first-team group and must reduce numbers by up to 15 players to hit the 25-man squad target. Under fresh FIFA rules, clubs can no longer isolate surplus players in so-called bomb squads, meaning any individuals not moved on before the window shuts must remain integrated with the senior setup.
To prevent disruption from an overcrowded squad, Chelsea may feel compelled to expedite departures, positioning Coventry favourably to negotiate deals for both Mudryk and Acheampong.
Aston Villa are said to have included Tomori among their summer targets. Reports suggest the Italy-based defender is viewed as a potential successor to Ezri Konsa, who is nearing a £51million switch to Arsenal. The former Chelsea academy graduate is believed to have been made available for transfer after entering the last 12 months of his San Siro contract.
