The Sky Blues are poised to acquire Manchester City teenager Stephen Mfuni. Lampard’s team are understood to have seen off competition from Watford to land the defender after he spent the previous campaign on loan at Vicarage Road, reports talkSPORT.
The 18-year-old featured in Enzo Maresca’s squad during Manchester City’s pre-season preparations after an impressive Championship stint during the latter part of last season. However, an injury brought his spell with the Hornets to an early conclusion.
Mfuni registered eight appearances for Watford, beginning every match and demonstrating adaptability between central defence and left-back positions. The youngster made his first-team debut for City in the FA Cup against Exeter prior to departing on loan.
Watford sporting director Luke Dowling stated earlier this month that his club maintained ongoing communication with Manchester City regarding Mfuni. Dowling indicated he would not have been shocked to witness the player remain under Maresca’s management.
Dowling noted that anyone who observed Watford’s fixtures last term when Mfuni particularly featured, with Manchester City losing Nathan Ake this year, would not be surprised if they retained him. Dowling pointed out that Mfuni is left-footed similar to Ake, capable of playing left-back, capable of playing left centre-half, so that would not surprise him at all.
Dowling mentioned that the club maintain regular contact with Manchester City, so they shall see. He noted it is unfortunate with loans of that nature as they never have control over them since they are not their players.
Yet Coventry appear to have secured the England youth international, who helped the Premier League champions claim the FA Youth Cup in 2024.
Mfuni has previously disclosed that he sought to model his playing style on Josko Gvardiol and John Stones. He also considers himself a defensive leader.
Mfuni has explained that he models elements of his game on Gvardiol and John Stones as he trains alongside them frequently and they share similarities with him. He attempts to pick up knowledge from them. He describes himself as fairly authoritative as well and a leader at the back. He identifies as a possession-based centre-back who is very rapid and enjoys carrying the ball forward and inspiring the team.
