Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has expressed his enthusiasm about the club’s return to the top flight, even though the significance of their opening fixture against Arsenal is becoming increasingly apparent.
In a conversation with talkSPORT, Lampard also discussed the impact Jose Mourinho has had on his career and how his former manager played a crucial part in his development.
Lampard said he is enthusiastic about the upcoming season and that the squad shares his sentiment. He highlighted the club’s remarkable story of spending 25 years outside the top division, along with the outstanding efforts of last season’s players in securing promotion.
He acknowledged that the reality of the situation sets in when you look at the fixture list and see a trip to Arsenal as the first match. He noted that the Gunners deservedly won the championship, making the challenge clear. However, he emphasised the need to concentrate on their own performance and meet the difficulty directly.
The former Chelsea midfielder mentioned that playing against elite sides away from home is inevitable throughout a Premier League campaign, and getting such matches early in the season could prove beneficial. He stressed the importance of thorough preparation and entering games with belief.
He expressed that he does not want his players to feel overwhelmed, as they have earned their opportunity to compete at this level. Going up against the reigning champions, he hopes they can deliver their best performance.
Lampard’s own achievements in the Premier League as a player are well documented, as are those of his former manager Mourinho. He mentioned watching the documentary about Mourinho, particularly enjoying the first one which focused on the Chelsea story and brought back many positive memories. He stated that his appreciation for Mourinho developed long ago, but watching the programme reinforced those feelings. While he has worked under several accomplished managers, Mourinho made the most significant impression on his career by boosting his self-assurance.
Lampard acknowledged that many managers have attempted to replicate Mourinho’s methods to some extent, but stated he cannot or would not pursue that path since he does not possess the same personality traits. Instead, he has taken individual elements from Mourinho’s approach, particularly the personal influence he had, and applies them by maintaining proximity to his squad and communicating effectively.
He strives to implement these lessons in his own style, endeavouring to be accessible to players so they perceive him as a coach on the field while also being available for any off-field concerns. He felt Mourinho provided that same support for him during their time together.
Lampard is eager to emphasise that his own journey is what motivates him and that he has no intention of becoming a homage act to his former boss.
He explained that he approaches management authentically, with his primary learning being the importance of achieving proper equilibrium. He noted that not every match can be won, that the role presents various challenges, and that seeking perfection daily is unrealistic. Finding the right balance between professional and personal life and concentrating on what truly matters is essential. He expressed hope that his 18 months at Coventry have demonstrated some personal growth in this area.
He added that establishing this equilibrium actually simplifies things, as it allows for proper rest while acknowledging that the role is demanding and will test you. Understanding this reality is part of the job.
