Coventry City line up transfer for Chelsea ‘untouchable’ after Xabi Alonso U-turn

Frank Lampard and Coventry City are pushing ahead with their squad overhaul ahead of the top-flight season

Coventry City have been suggested as potential suitors for one of Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea players who was previously deemed indispensable

The Sky Blues are apparently interested in acquiring Chelsea full-back Josh Acheampong during the current transfer period, with the London club apparently willing to negotiate a sale.

TalkSPORT reports that the Chelsea defender, who had been described as unavailable just months ago, might now be permitted to depart Stamford Bridge.

Sources indicate Chelsea rebuffed multiple overtures for the adaptable defender at the start of the summer, with Alonso anticipating the player would be part of his plans this term.

Yet the Blues seem to have altered their position and may be willing to transact with someone Lampard knows well.

The story suggests Lampard wants to bring the 20-year-old defender to Coventry for the coming season.

Acheampong featured 17 times in the Premier League for Chelsea during the previous campaign and would add top-tier know-how to the Coventry squad.

Reports indicate Alonso’s team could be amenable to completing a transfer closer to the end of the trading period, representing a significant reversal from their earlier firmly-rejected stance.

Manchester City, Manchester United and German Bundesliga organisation Bayern Munich have all been mentioned as potential destinations for the England youth cap, with clubs holding him in strong regard.

Whether Chelsea would approve a permanent exit remains uncertain, with a temporary stint also apparently under consideration.

Alonso has acknowledged that he must trim his defensive options down to four or five players, as the Blues currently possess an oversized roster.

Acheampong remains tied to Chelsea until 2029, having committed to fresh terms with the club last year.
