Former Coventry City striker Dion Dublin has offered his apologies to the club’s supporters for his move to Aston Villa, nearly three decades after the transfer that upset so many fans.
The one-time Sky Blues frontman shattered the hearts of countless followers back in the autumn of 1998 when he chose to leave for City’s bitter rivals, completing a switch to Villa Park in a deal worth £5.75million.
At the time, a significant portion of the fanbase turned their backs on him, and some have never reconciled with him despite his impressive tally of 61 goals across 145 top-flight matches. Perhaps because of this, the former popular player made only rare visits back to the club and never participated in any Legends Day events. That situation has shifted over the past year as Dublin has returned in connection with his media commitments, and this week he shared a personal video message through Sky Sports.
Sitting at the CBS Arena, Dublin addressed the supporters directly, acknowledging his five-year stint at the club and expressing his deep affection for the former home ground of Highfield Road. He thanked the fans for their loyalty through both the difficult moments and the successful times. Dublin described what he considers the finest changing room environment he experienced throughout his 22-year professional football career, noting the remarkable connection between players and supporters that made the tight stadium atmosphere so special and contributed significantly to their achievements. He concluded by thanking the fans for their continued support and expressing regret about his decision to join Villa while maintaining his affection for them.
