Frank Lampard has a limited window remaining to complete his Coventry City squad ahead of the September 1 deadline.
The Sky Blues have been active in the market with nine new arrivals costing more than £100million, though questions remain over whether sufficient depth exists to mount a credible survival bid in the top flight.
Here is an assessment of the summer business conducted so far, the statements made by club officials, and what remains on the agenda before the 11pm Tuesday cutoff.
Summer dealings thus far
Following a sluggish beginning to their recruitment drive, Coventry experienced a hectic August with seven additional players joining last term’s two loanees, Frank Onyeka and Carl Rushworth, who have now committed to permanent deals.
Onyeka arrived from Brentford for £5.9million, with Rushworth completing a £22million switch from Brighton. Aurele Amenda cost £15.3million from Frankfurt, Loum Tchaouna £19.6million from Burnley, Caleb Yirenkyi £23million from FC Nordsjaelland, Gustavo Hamer £6million from Sheffield United, Taiwo Awoniyi £9million from Nottingham Forest, and Sidiki Cherif £20.9million from Fenerbahce. Daniel Bentley joined on a free transfer from Wolves.
The total expenditure stands at approximately £106.7million.
Owner Doug King’s thoughts on further activity
Speaking to talkSPORT on August 20, King noted that the club had been active the previous weekend securing Awoniyi and Cherif, describing the club’s growing appeal to potential signings. He praised Lampard’s involvement in the recruitment process and expressed satisfaction with the summer’s progress, indicating that any additional arrivals would be welcome.
Areas requiring attention
Left-back represents the most obvious gap, with Jay Dasilva established as Lampard’s primary option. Jake Bidwell receives high praise from the manager for his dressing room presence but saw limited action last term, suggesting reinforcements are needed. Miguel Brau ranks third in the pecking order and having struggled to establish himself in the Championship, the Spanish defender appears unlikely to feature in Premier League plans.
Coventry’s pursuit of Fikayo Tomori throughout the summer points to Lampard’s desire for an experienced central defender. The club has also been associated with Manchester City’s Stephen Mfuni recently, while reports indicate a £6million agreement for Brentford’s Ethan Pinnock is in place.
The left flank constitutes another area where additional options could prove valuable, given that Ephron Mason-Clark serves as the sole natural performer in that role. Mason-Clark has demonstrated vulnerability to muscular problems and missed the opening fixture at Arsenal.
Lampard values adaptability within his squad. Brandon Thomas-Asante demonstrated capability in that position at the Emirates, as he did during part of the previous campaign. Gustavo Hamer possesses experience playing wide from his Sheffield United career. The role of 19-year-old Sikidi Cherif, a 6ft 2in striker, remains to be determined, though he can also operate on the left side.
Players under consideration
While Tomori features regularly in transfer speculation, interest from numerous other top-flight clubs complicates any potential move. Liverpool have been mentioned alongside more recent links to Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.
The Athletic reports that Coventry have finalised a £6million agreement for Brentford’s 33-year-old Pinnock.
Porto’s Francisco Moura has been suggested for the left-back vacancy, though Olympiacos have also expressed strong interest. Stephen Mfuni offers flexibility as a left-sided central defender capable of filling in at full-back.
Regarding left-wing options, Lampard is reportedly interested in Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk on a season-long arrangement. The 25-year-old Ukrainian would bring considerable pace and Premier League expertise.
Potential departures
Miguel Brau appears destined for an exit under the circumstances mentioned, with a season-long loan to Portuguese top-flight club Académico de Viseu reportedly imminent.
Bidwell could move if seeking regular opportunities, though Lampard may retain him for his leadership qualities and squad depth.
Centre-half represents a crowded position with five players currently registered, potentially increasing to six following the Pinnock deal. Luke Woolfenden emerges as the most likely candidate to depart, though his current injury status could complicate any move this window.
The goalkeeping situation offers scope for one player to leave following Bentley senior’s arrival from Wolves. The 33-year-old is expected to challenge Ben Wilson for the backup spot behind Rushworth. Oliver Dovin, the highly-rated Swedish international, has been sidelined for 18 months through a serious knee problem and would benefit considerably from temporary game time. The 24-year-old had begun establishing himself in the Championship before his injury, making a second-tier loan spell ideally suited to his development.
Midfield currently boasts considerable depth, potentially leaving Josh Eccles, a local product, short of opportunities. Wolves have been credited with interest following their relegation.
Up front, Ellis Simms has also attracted Wolves’ attention. However, with Haji Wright absent for up to three months and Awoniyi still building fitness after missing Forest’s pre-season programme, Lampard may be reluctant to reduce his striking options.
Cherif provides another attacking alternative, though the promising teenager remains relatively unproven at this level and may require time to adjust. Simms earned recognition for his hold-up play against Arsenal, demonstrating the physical qualities necessary for top-flight football and strengthening the case for retaining him.
